International Interfaces

Engineers, operations managers and sales specialists at the German subsidiary of a high-technology company interacted with colleagues in Hong Kong and the PR China on a regular basis. Goals to be accomplished included (depending on department and function) improved quality management in China, expanded sourcing from China and business development for the Chinese market. Various difficulties were encountered in the collaboration between the German and Chinese parties, including irritation regarding communication behaviors, concerns about the real degree of mutual understanding, questionmarks regarding appropriate influencing and feedback strategies, as well as difficulty in assessing each other’s expectations. All these factors were perceived as hindering effectiveness and obstacles in reaching business goals. In the framework of a 2-day training on Chinese culture, communication and business behavior, information on these subject areas was provided. In addition, the German participants learned to contrast their own cultural conditioning with that of their Chinese counterparts, allowing them to develop new interaction approaches based on clearer insight into the cultural and market dynamics at play. Moreover, the participants analyzed some of their own challenges in light of the training information and devised new solutions for their business issues.

Note
Employees in key roles who interface with partners and/or clients in other countries often face substantial cross-cultural challenges, which frequently lead to difficulties or non-performance in the execution of tasks and strategies across borders. Cultural knowledge combined with a broadened behavior repertoire reduces friction and enhances the quality and timeliness of outcomes.

Kultur & Management, Inc., has worked with nearly 2000 participants in cross-cultural trainings since its inception. Trainings include culture-specific sessions, e.g. on China, Germany and the US, as well as trainings on general cross-cultural business skills.
